An excellent opportunity has arisen to join a world leading global organisation, our global FMCG client Unilever, the powerhouse behind brands such as Domestos, Cif, Sure and Persil have an opening for a Materials Chemist for a 9 month contract, paying between £29,059 and £35,517 per annum pro rata depending on experience.

This role will be based from our clients Advanced Research & Development Facility in Liverpool but will also involve regular travel over to their Research & Development Facility in Port Sunlight (only 15 minutes via train).

This role is for a chemist working as part of the Home Care Science & Technology Group, supporting innovations across laundry, hard surface cleaning, machine and hand dishwashing. The role will support the Advanced Materials & Surface Science (AMSS) Programme in the development and assessment of new sustainable and biodegradable ingredients and product formulations.

The ideal candidate has a strong chemistry or materials science background with experience in new materials development, ingredient formulation and evaluation. The ideal candidate demonstrates outstanding experimental technique, attention to detail for the creation of robust data sets and a strong commitment to safe practise in the laboratory.

The principal responsibilities of the role are to:

  • identify and source sustainable cleaning product ingredients;
  • characterise the properties of new cleaning product ingredients;
  • formulate the ingredients into cleaning products bases;
  • assess the performance and stability of these formulations using standard assays;
  • generate robust data packages to support patenting, data publication and product claim generation.
  • set own day to day work plans and design suitable experimental approaches.
  • The role holder will also be expected to analyse data, report results and make recommendations both in written and verbal form to key stakeholders.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team with chemists, modellers and other physical scientists.

Competencies

  • Ability to managing own work plan, including experimental activities, data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently under the guidance of workstream leaders.
  • Ability to adapt and develop current methodologies.
  • Awareness of intellectual property.

Experience and Skills

  • Masters or higher degree in materials chemistry, materials science or a closely related science field.
  • Ability to clearly present and report results and recommendations to project teams.
  • Ability to conduct scientific literature searches and undertake basic statistical analysis.
  • Good working knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Previous experience of innovation in home and personal care products is highly desirable but not essential.
  • A background in development of biodegradable and sustainably sourced materials is highly desirable but not essential.
  • A familiarity with the use of automated platforms (robotic systems) is highly desirable but not essential.
