Lockkeeper's Assistant
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To provide the duty permanent and relief lock and weir keeper with support and assistance in:
The management / maintenance and regulation of water levels
The management of navigation and recreation activities
Covering meal breaks at Teddington Lock
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
In all cases working under the direction of the lock and weir keeper on duty to assist in:
The day to day management and maintenance of the site
The passage of boats and boaters through locks
Providing information, guidance and advice to all customers visiting the site in a courteous manner
Responding effectively to emergency incidents under the supervision of Duty Lock and Weir Keeper.
Take responsibility for the Health and Safety of yourself and visitors to the site on or off the river
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
High level of interpersonal skills is essential in working with colleagues, customers and commercial operators on the river.
Experience of and aptitude for gardening/grounds maintenance tasks is desirable
An understanding of the practices, procedures and legislation pertaining to the management of the Thames navigation is important
Working hours will be - 1000 - 1800 hours (7 hours per day) worked on a rota of six days on and two days off, including weekends and Bank Holidays.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The post holder will need to be able to reach the lock site(s) at which s/he will work. As some sites are remote from public transport the ability to drive and use of a vehicle insured for business use would be useful.
As the work will take place beside the river and locks it is essential that the post holder can swim. The work can also, at times, be physically demanding and hence the post holder will need to be physically fit. The post holder will be required to work regular weekends and Bank Holidays. The conditions/allowances applicable are uniform, casual car user allowance and weekend enhanced pay at 1.5.
