Shiplake & Hurley locks

The West Thames Waterway Department is responsible for the management of the river and our aim is to maintain the healthy growth of the Thames for leisure, business, local communities and wildlife. We also have a statutory duty to 'maintain the public right of navigation' - in other words, keep the river 'open' and free from obstruction for all who wish to use it.

In addition to making the river accessible all year round by maintaining water levels, assisting boats to pass through our locks and enforcing legislation, our staff work hard to promote the Thames as a great leisure destination. So it's recreation as well as regulation, and we want the river to be enjoyed by as many people as possible - safely and without spoiling the enjoyment of others. The Environment Agency is the navigation authority for the non-tidal River Thames from Lechlade to the tidal boundary at Teddington in Greater London
