Manpower Announces Winners of UK’s Most Valued Employee Competition - Oxford pharmacy worker scoops top award

Carolyn Woodward of L Rowland & Co Pharmacy in Oxford has been named the UK’s Most Valued Employee, following a nationwide search by employment specialists Manpower.

The Unsung Hero competition, open to all organisations, and for all workers, was launched by Manpower to recognise those in the workplace who always go above and beyond the call of duty.

Unsung Hero judge, Ruth Hounslow, of Manpower UK says: "We had some exceptional entries for the competition – making the judges’ job extremely tough. Carolyn displays all the characteristics of a truly valuable employee: she is extremely proactive, very efficient and always puts in 110%. In addition to all her regular duties, she goes out of her way to help customers, including, in some instances, hand delivering medication to patients out of hours."

Carolyn has worked as a dispenser and shop assistant at L Rowland and Co (Retail) Ltd pharmacy on Oxford Road for 17 years. She knows everything about running the shop, and is always contacted by other branches in the chain for help and advice. As overall winner, Carolyn wins a recognition award plus an all-inclusive seven-night holiday for two to Mexico, including the once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with dolphins.

Carolyn Woodward says: "I’m so amazed I’ve won this award – it’s a complete shock. I really don’t know why I was even nominated as I just do my job and looking out for customers is part of my job. The Mexico trip sounds great, although I’m terrified of flying – but I guess working in a pharmacy means I’m in the right place to get something to ease the nerves!"

Pharmacist Jonathan Martin nominated Carolyn to show his appreciation for all her hard work: "Carolyn is the glue that holds the whole pharmacy together and I believe there is nobody who gives more of themselves to their job. She knows every one of our regular customers and is always ready to listen, chat and help. She thoroughly deserves to win the top holiday - the only problem is, it’s hell on earth for the rest of us trying to cope when she’s away!"

Employers or line managers entered their chosen employee into one of six categories, providing examples of how each individual employee has made a difference to the business. The category winners were Alex Rosie (Technical), Anthony Robinson (Industrial), Richard Payne (Driving), Alec Abbott (Public) and Adrian Hatcher (Office). All receive a recognition award and £300 Virgin Experience vouchers.

The winners were selected by judges: Tony Howard, Chairman of Manpower UK; Ruth Hounslow, Head of Marketing at Manpower UK; Keith Faulkner, Chairman of Working Links; Alan Warner, President of SOCPO and Corporate Director [People and Property] Hertfordshire County Council; and Pavita Walker, Director of Talent Management, Barclays Bank
