Manpower is seeking active and organised people on behalf of West Sussex County Council to lead a group of adolescents in the National Citizenship Service programme for a 20 day period (plus training) during summer 2017 for selected dates in July and August.


To have overall responsibility for the safety and well-being of a group of adolescents aged 15-17 years through the National Citizen Service programme in West Sussex with the support of an assistant over a four week period in the summer 2017.
To ensure that the adolescents are able to fully participate in their NCS programme through the facilitation of the curriculum. The aim of the programme is to support the participant's personal and social development and help them to develop the confidence, skills and attitudes they will need to take on active roles within their communities and develop themselves for the future.

Key Accountabilities:

* To engage in face to face youth work with a cohort of adolescents for a period of 20 days which includes 2 x 5 day residentials and 2 x 5 days blocks within the local community (non-residential). Through the provision of leadership and guidance and acting as a positive role model at all times, to promote the good name of the National Citizen service and WSCC at all times

* To develop and deliver an innovative NCS programme from the provided curriculum. This programme will promote social mix and develop an individual's skills and experience, in line with the NCS Ethos.

* Ensuring that the requirements of the WSCC Equal Opportunities Policies are met locally in particular the needs of minority ethnic communities, adolescents with learning difficulties and disabilities and other targeted groups.

* Providing leadership and support to the Youth Support Assistant and the volunteers working with the group

* Ensuring policies and procedures for health and safety are adhered to, including undertaking risk assessments for each of the team's activities, and recording and reporting incidents, as delegated by Wave Coordinator.

* To attend and participate in the planning and delivery of the programme and related meetings such as training and staff meetings. Complete administration as required in accordance with deadlines

* To contribute to the achievement of the contracted targets:
- 90% of youths who start the programme complete the programme
- 100% of youths who complete the programme have planned for their 30 hours post programme volunteering

* To carry out any other duties commensurate to the grade of this post as required.

Experience required:

* Experience of working directly with a wide range of adolescents (Essential)
* Experience and understanding of managing challenging behaviour (Essential)
* Experience of working within a team
* Experience of managing and motivating groups of people
* Experience and understanding of health and safety, safeguarding and data handling


* Ability to work with adolescents to develop programmes and activities that respond to their interests, offer challenges and meet their identified personal & social development needs, in line with the NCS Curriculum

* Sound communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with adolescents where there is a need to interpret and pull together a variety of sources of information in order to answer queries, offer advice, give information, assist to solve problems and/or develop practical solutions.

* Ability to work as part of a team to motivate and support team members, other staff and colleagues along with the ability to work to on your own initiative and to an agreed action plan

* Ability to build effective and positive relationships with a wide range of adolescents and community based groups

This is an exciting opportunity to support the delivery of NCS for adolescents in the Arun & Chichester areas, within the Youth Service.

Applicants must have a background in working directly with adolescents; as part of this commitment, we require all candidates to return a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) certificate.

The hourly pay rate for this role will be £9.60. Selection weekends will be held in January and April 2017

Candidates may be eligible for a bonus upon successful completion of the project.

17th July to 11th August
31st July to 25th August
