Job Details

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is a major government department which helps the honest majority to get their tax right and makes it hard for the dishonest minority to cheat the system.

We’re currently looking for Criminal Investigators within our Criminal Justice arm. It’s where our Criminal Justice professionals investigate the most serious frauds by bearing down on tax evasion using the full range of law enforcement powers and capabilities. It’s tax, but not as you know it.

What could I be doing?

Our Criminal Investigators are on the very front line in the fight against criminals, fraudsters and tax cheats. You can expect a combination of desk-based investigation alongside static and foot surveillance as you help gather vital evidence on individuals and organised crime groups to prepare cases for courts – attending yourself to give both evidence and to obtain orders and warrants.

Do I have the right skills or qualifications?

You may have an investigative or intelligence background or not. What matters is that you have a naturally inquisitive mind. But you’ll also need the ability to build a rapport with a wide range of different people. Teamwork is vital to what we do, and you’ll have what it takes to be a valued team member.

Due to the dynamic working environment, you may be expected to work evenings and weekends at short notice and will be paid an annual allowance in respect to that flexibility.

Training

As well as core training and a structured induction, your role-specific training could include chain-of evidence, search warrants, taking witness statements, giving evidence and more. We offer advanced training in driving, intelligence practice and methodology, case building skills and source handling, as well as practical skills around arrests, searches, surveillance and much more.

As your career within Fraud Investigation progresses there may be opportunities to specialise in other areas such as financial recovery, or covert surveillance.
