Location: University House (near to Millennium Point)

Duration of role: 12 months Maternity Cover

Closing Date: Thursday 4th October

Manpower are looking for a dynamic, experienced Event Manager for our client, Birmingham City University. You should have a strong track record of delivering a range of high-quality association, corporate and conference type events.

The role will be responsible for managing a small team within our Events Team in the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) department.

You will be expected to plan and execute the resources to successfully deliver BCU's wide programme of over 2,000 events a year to stakeholders, businesses and commercial event opportunities to the required service standards of the University ensuring resources are deployed in the most effective manner. As part of this the Events Manager will be responsible for all VCO events, RIE and faculty event management, outside of open days and graduation ceremonies.

You will need to demonstrate that you have a considerable management and leadership skills and experience of working in event management. You can build strong relationships with clients to gain a clear understanding of their needs, interpret briefs and act as an ambassador for Birmingham City University at all times.

You are required to be educated to degree or diploma level, in event management or marketing. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential.


Main activities and responsibilities


  • Identify potential commercial booking opportunities & lead / implement the business plan for this area developing commercial relationships that generate the potential for repeat business
  • Explore additional services that could be provided to external clients as part of the event offer, aimed at securing additional revenue for the University
  • Fostering partnerships / relationships with internal colleagues to develop the University's programme of events.
  • Market and promote the range of commercial event provision available identifying typical or likely external customers and feeding this into the marketing efforts.
  • Undertake the public relations aspects of the job, representing the University at industry shows etc. keeping informed of industry developments.
  • Venues and Estate Developments
  • Feeding in to discussions about new buildings, sometimes in person and sometimes through line management/directorate, offering a view on how new space might support the hosting of events and issues to consider
  • Making estates managers and the directorate reports aware of concerns, performance issues, limitations or problems with existing venue space
  • Reporting damages and misuse of spaces as appropriate
  • Monitoring capacity issues and feeding back to senior management opportunities for increased space utilisation or concerns over an absence of capacity.
  • Working in conjunction with similar posts withinspecialists' areas of the University (Conservatoire &Parkside Media House) to develop best practice, share enquiries, develop business etc.
    • Managing a Timetable of Events Across the Campuses
  • Ensuring an annual events calendar is effectively managed and shared across the University
  • Developing a system of 'reserve bookings' where appropriate
  • Making decisions - seeking Director input in some instances - about priorities where clashes emerge.
    • Determining a Structure of Costs for Putting on Certain Events
  • Supporting internal customers to minimise outlay
  • Secure economies of scale where possible
  • Establish a reliable list of service providers, both internal and external, to ensure high standards of event support.
  • Managing procedures and contractual processes with both internal and external clients
  • Relationship Management
  • Leading on ensuring customer satisfaction, internal and external, with the bookings they have made
  • Acting as the first level of escalation when events officer or equivalent is unable to address customer concerns
  • Acting as a conduit between the customer and directorate, ensuring complaints and grievances are communicated to senior management as appropriate
  • Quality Control
  • Attending events - prioritising according to need and experience required
  • Ensuring that events are hosted to a high standard, professionally presented and supported
  • Monitoring and managing the on-site provision of services by staff associated with or contracted by the University, bringing concerns about performance or resource constraints impacting on service delivery to directorate management.
  • To be available for emergency evening and weekend calls when team members are running events on behalf of the University or within University premises.
