Job Details

Manpower is currently recruiting for a Youth Justice Officer to work on a temporary 4 month assignment starting immediately within The Youth Offending Service of a local authority based in Durrington, Worthing.

The Youth Offending Service is a multi-agency statutory partnership which provides services before and after Court appearances to meet the requirements of the Youth Justice Board. Its primary aim is to prevent offending and reduce reoffending by children and YP and works in partnership with a variety of agencies to ensure that children and YP at risk of offending are identified and offered appropriate intervention. This multi-agency approach provides a widespread opportunity for referrals from all stakeholders, building a sustainable network of support and expertise to prevent re-offending, and enable positive and sustainable outcomes for children, YP and families.

You will work with high risk and complex children and YP at risk of prosecution, on bail or remand programmes and subject to Court Orders, and children and YP subject to Out of Court disposals, community Court Orders, Detention and Training Orders and long term custodial sentences. You will provide assessment, contact and structured support to children and YP as part of the team's programme of intervention as required under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 and other legislation.

Duties will include:

  • Act as a main Court Duty Officer within the YOS, attending Youth Courts and on occasions, Crown Court, to present pre-sentence, specific sentence reports and Bail Supervision/Community Remand Programme Reports to the magistrate, providing relevant information in contested cases and prosecuting Breaches.
  • Prepare reports for external and internal use and correspondence.
  • Carry out assessments of service user's suitability/need for available programmes.
  • Devise intervention plans and make necessary referrals to support agencies.
  • Devise, implement, manage and evaluate interventions/actions for the supervision of high risk children and YP in the community; be responsible for the enforcement of orders where children and YP fail to comply (breach); make necessary referrals to support agencies to ensure effective resettlement of a YP from custody to the community.
  • Undertake assessments, intervention and court work with children and YP.
  • Devise training plans and supervise children and YP in secure facilities subject to Detention and Training Orders or Remands to Youth Detention Accommodation.
  • Authorise the issuing of in-county travel warrants to YP as per agreed criteria.

The ideal candidate will have youth and remand court experience and be confident in a court setting, and be able to competently complete Asset Plus and have experience of using the case management system Childview Youth Justice. You will require the ability to understand complex reports from other agencies, e.g. Police, Psychiatrists, Social Workers.
