Job Description:
Birmingham School of Fashion and Textiles are looking for three Level 6 students to take on the roles of Work Placement Mentors as part of the Work Placement Module. This contract will run for a total of five weeks.
Each mentor will have a gained specific skills and understanding whilst working within the Fashion or Textiles industry and will be able to provide guidance and support to students. You will also have relevant connections within the industry.
The Work Placement Mentor role will involve being present and visible to students during drop in sessions to listen to queries and give appropriate advice. The mentor should be able to help research, and suggest potential companies to students to secure a work placement or gain general work experience. The post holder will offer one to one tutorials with students to support them through the process. The mentor will work closely with the staff in the school to collate a database of contacts.
The Work Placement Mentor role is a great opportunity for you to develop your own communication, technical and organisation skills in addition to gaining experience of tutoring other students.
Hours of Work:
6 hours per week - specific times to be negotiated at interview stage
Main Duties:
The main duties for the role include but are not limited to:
- Hosting drop in sessions for students with queries about securing a work placement.
- Offering tutorials to give advice on employability in the industry.
- Signposting to suitable companies or job websites and assisting with any application processes where necessary.
- Working with staff from the school, you will collate a database of useful resources, live work placement companies and suitable information relating to the Work Placement Module.
- Meet with the ADM careers team to share best practice and gain valuable resources to assist you in your role.
Personal Skills
- You will be proficient with Microsoft Excel
- Effective communicator
- Strong organisational skills
- Excellent time management
- Relevant experience within the Fashion or Textiles industry
- Have completed the Work Placement Module
All Work Placement Mentors are also required to do the following:
- Attend all of their booked student meetings.
- Refer students to relevant members of staff if they are unsure on how to help.
- Be strict with tutorial time to ensure you do not exceed the time allotted.
