My client is recruiting for a Shift Manager to join their team at a leading supplier of fresh food brands to major retailers and consumers. The shift manager plays a vital part in ensuring that every individual has a responsibility for Health & Safety. The jobholder must ensure that his/her actions do not put oneself and others at risk and cooperate fully with the company in respect to Health & Safety.

  • Always ensure that the on-site "clean-as-you-go" procedure is followed.
  • Ensure that fire-exits and walkways are kept clear. Ensure that fire doors are closed. Never block access to fire extinguishers or doors.
  • Report all accidents and near-misses to the relevant line manager immediately. Ensure that any damage to plant or machinery is reported to the relevant line manager immediately.
  • Ensure that before using any equipment the job holder will check for damage or excessive wear. They will also check that the equipment is clear of debris and can function safely. Ensure that all guards are replaced if removed. Obey any specific work practices I.e. start-up procedures
  • Always obey signs and wear protective clothing where required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a list of core responsibilities to be completed by the jobholder. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Focus on the key performance indicators (KPIs) identified by the General Manager, and work towards achieving and surpassing agreed targets
  • Optimise efficiency and reduce waste
  • Working closely with the engineering team, agree and implement improvements to the process to maximise machine productivity, minimise down-time and ensure that hygiene operations do not impact negatively on machinery
  • Plan production runs to minimise waste, maximise product life, meet customer dispatch times, and achieve the best possible throughput
  • Drive product quality, integrity and traceability. Ensure work is completed to a high-standard, and all necessary documentation is completed
  • Work in conjunction with central / QA teams to implement legislative changes / management system updates
  • Conduct regular team briefs with direct reports
  • Operate the department within the agreed headcount to achieve the salary budget
  • Conduct performance reviews of the production team, and report feedback to the Site Director
  • Ensure that company standards are adhered to.
  • Follow the company's disciplinary procedures and conduct performance/disciplinary counselling where appropriate
  • Identify and develop potential within the team, and coordinate the relevant training and support required
  • Foster a constructive relationship with all departments and ensure lines of communication are open
  • Identify areas of inefficiency and waste. In agreement with the Site Director, implement and review the agreed changes
  • Liaise with Logistics to ensure that packed product is available on time for all orders
  • Be proactive with continuous improvement ideas and projects
  • Undertake risk assessments/ accident investigations in the department as appropriate
  • To be "audit-ready" at all times, ensure that site hygiene, health & safety and document control are in line with customer specifications and always up to date
  • Oversee and approve plans for periodic deep cleansing of Critical Control Points
  • Work closely with the Quality Manager to plan and provide an effective and efficient hygiene service
  • Ensure the team work to the required procedures and instructions in relation to HACCP procedures

The demands of the business may change in line with customer requirements and changes may be made to the above guidelines. The jobholder should be flexible to the changing demands of the business.

Training and Education:

The jobholder may be expected to complete training in the following areas. The requirements will be dependent on the jobholder's previous experience, knowledge, qualifications, and the demands of the specific activities.

  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • Business Improvement Techniques BIT
  • Management qualifications related to the role
  • Manual handling
  • Manual/Electric pallet truck
  • A thorough understanding of HACCP procedures
  • Safe systems of work
  • Food handling/hygiene
  • Accident Investigation
  • Machine training e.g. MOBA, COSTII, CP12
  • TFMS Training

You will be joining a leading and well-respected business and can enjoy long term career progression. The salary is Circa £30,000 per year and will be dependent on experience.
