Temporary Relief Lock and Weir Keeper
THE ROLE:
We are looking for a motivated people who like working outside in a customer facing environment. As a Temporary Relief Lock and Weir Keeper you will be asked to provide cover for more than one lock on the River Thames. Full onsite training will be given. Your main responsibilities will be:
Managing and regulating water levels,
Providing safe passage to boaters and managing activities on and around the lock sites and reaches associated with the locks.
Assisting colleagues and customers by providing local expertise and knowledge to ensure effective management of the navigation of the river
Looking after the lock buildings, facilities and grounds to provide a high-quality, safe and clean environment to minimise the risk of flooding and to preserve the heritage of the site.
Maintaining and developing health & safety good practice
Developing and maintaining a strong focus on customer service and act as an ambassador for all aspects of the Environment Agency work.
Undertaking compliance and regulation activities to a PACE standard
Ensuring efficient record keeping and information storage systems are in place.

Collecting customer payments including licence sales, revenue collection and reconciliation and managing of petty cash.
THE TEAM:
The Thames Waterways department has a responsibility to manage the navigation of the non-tidal River Thames and our primary aim is to provide a first class service to all our customers. We do this through our lock and weir keepers, operational teams and compliance, commercial development and business teams.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Strong customer focus skills
Excellent communication skills particularly face to face and over the phone
Well organised and methodical with attention to detail.
Achieves results and delivers outcomes
A quick learner who can work effectively and efficiently on your own or as part of a team
Able to swim
Able to drive and have a valid licence
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
You will need to be able to reach the lock site(s) at which you will work. As some sites are remote from public transport, the ability to drive and the use of a vehicle insured for business use will be essential for reliefs at all sites.
It is essential you can swim and, as the work can at times be physically demanding, you will also need to be physically fit.
You will be required to work regular weekends and Bank Holidays. The allowances applicable to the role are uniform (this must be worn), casual car user allowance and weekend enhanced payment at 1.5 times.
