Job Role


All Monitors are required to work as part of a wider student team who provide first line support within a given workshop. You will undertake duties assigned by members of the technical staff which may involve working alone and under your own initiative until task completion. You will be required to work during evening periods in rotation with existing or new student workshop monitors.


Main Activities and responsibilities:


1. Ensure that workshop facilities and space are maintained and prepared in-line with the training and guidance provided by Senior Technical Supervisors.

2. A good level of housekeeping will be maintained at all times ensuring that high standards of practice are effectively applied to all the activities you are engaged with.

3. Liaise with other monitors to ensure consistent support and equitable workload is provided to individual and groups of students using the facilities.

4. Offer general guidance and support to fellow students ensuring activities are in compliance with workshop defined policies and procedures.

5. Maintain Health and Safety during activities in line with training.

6. Report and Record incidents or near misses to supervisors at the earliest opportunity.

7. Report and Record to supervisor equipment or machinery failure or fault.

8. Support the updating of asset inventory as and when needed.

9. Undertake specialised training where necessary in support of the role.

10. Maintain existing systems outlined as part of your individual training for a specific area.


Additional Key Requirements:


Communication:

Offer clear instruction when assisting peers. Maintain a good level of feedback between team members to ensure a consistent high level approach to service delivery is maintained. Ensure that activities which overlap between different staff working hours are communicated effectively.

Team working and collaborative work:

Liaise with technical staff on a daily basis to ensure student projects are completed in an effective manner. Ask and receive guidance from senior team members where necessary. If in doubt request further support from senior team members.

Initiative, problem solving and decision making:

Undertake visual checks of equipment prior to use and ensure materials and equipment is being used in accordance with appropriate guidance. Provide one to one and group support to staff and students who require assistance and initialise activities or appropriate behaviour where necessary.

Work Environment:

Be aware of risks in the work environment, assess the potential impact of activities undertaken by peers and understand the impact that this may have on others. Provide feedback to senior technical staff on issues that may be of risk but may not have been appropriately assessed by students or external staff members.


Person Specification:


Ø Current School of Art BCU Student with good eye for detail and enthusiasm for developing personal skills in a given workshop environment.

Ø Good interpersonal skills ability to communicate well with student peers and staff alike. Capable of encouraging active participation in complicated tasks.

Ø Able to recognise and provide students with help and capable of intervening to provide assistance.

Ø Able to work on own initiative in support of activities. Motivated to ask for guidance where necessary and able to implement complex procedures to ensure tasks are completed on time and safely.

Ø Self-motivated and flexible to provide support and cover across to meet the technical requirements.
