This exciting opportunity for a Senior Firmware Engineer is for a dynamic high technology design and engineering company based in Cambridge, UK who works with well-known manufacturers around the globe, specialising in pioneering and developing cutting-edge technology from concept to mass production, achieved through technology licensing and partnerships with global manufacturing corporations.

With over a hundred granted patents, a key product is a platform technology that allows the control, positioning and movement of smart materials with high precision, such as motors are smaller than a human hair with the potential to be positioned with the accuracy of the wavelength of light. This company is the world leader, capable of mastering and controlling these materials with exceptional accuracy.

The Senior Firmware Engineer will be dynamic and ambitious, joining a growing team of world-class electronics, control and firmware engineers who are making their mark on smart actuator technology. The role will report to the Electronics Director, head of the team developing leading edge electronics and control solutions for the patented technology.

The ideal Senior Firmware Engineer will be passionate, interested and interesting, able to play a significant role in a highly skilled team, prioritising activities, balancing long and short term objectives and finding efficient ways to solve problems. The role involves some travel to Asia and USA, to support the development of our actuator technology and solutions.

Naturally, you must also be self-motivated, able to prioritise activities with excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills. Strong analytical skills and a passion for technology are also expected.

Additionally, you must be able to demonstrate experience working in a fast-paced environment, able to assimilate information and requests from customers and partners and be comfortable with customer-facing interaction.

Furthermore, you must also demonstrate a strong team ethic effective interaction and work with other technical teams and the ability to mentor junior engineers.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work within the team of mechanical, control, electronics, firmware and performance engineers to build on the proprietary control algorithms developed to meet the needs of the market.
  • Specify, develop and evaluate embedded firmware solutions to drive actuator technology, and support transfer of these into high volume production.
  • Develop and improve the methods and procedures to enhance ability to deliver successful products.
  • Interface with partners and customers to understand their requirements and to deliver the assistance required to utilise products.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • 1st Class or 2:1 BSc or BEng in Electronic Engineering or other relevant degree course
  • 5 years demonstrable industrial experience and achievements
  • 5 years experience in embedded programming of micro-controllers
  • 5 yea's C/C++ development
  • Designing to requirement specifications
  • Creating technical documentation
  • Writing specifications
  • Experience in mentoring more junior engineers
  • Defect tracking and peer review

Desirable experience:

  • Use of Python
  • Digital signal processing (DSP)
  • Board-level debug and test
  • Use of oscilloscopes
  • System-level architectural design

Other skills of interest:

  • MatLab or Simulink experience
  • Assembler-level programming
  • Appreciation of Agile development methods
  • Test Driven Development (TDD)
  • Closed loop control system design and development
  • Transferring new technology into mass production
  • Design for manufacture
  • Appreciation of mechanical design
