We have an amazing opportunity to work with our client as a Materials Lab Technician based in Yeovil. You will be working from 7.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday 37 hours a week, paying between £25-£30 per hour dependent on experience, this is a temporary role until May 2020.

Responsibilities

  • Support of various manufacturing and engineering requests for materials analysis, metallographic preparation, evaluation of samples and operation of SEM to support customer requirements
  • Photo-documentation at both macro and micro levels. Calibration and routine maintenance of laboratory analytical instrumentation and metallographic preparation equipment
  • Execution of microhardness and hardness measurements and tensile tests
  • Creation and maintenance of work instructions. Administrative support for lab operations
  • Technical report writing, recording and reporting of analysis results using client web-based LIMS software
  • Frequently communicates with customers and lab management
  • Closely works with ISC and M&PE engineering to understand production requirements, material specifications, and how materials are used in the manufacture of client products
  • Support of continues improvement processes (VPD, Six Sigma, etc.)
  • Compliance to all corporate and site HSE requirements
  • Compliance to corporate, site and department-level quality system requirements

Materials testing activities include (but are not limited to)

  • Metallographic specimen preparation
  • Microstructure evaluations
  • Mechanical testing (hardness, tensile)
  • Moating's (coverage, adhesion & thickness)
  • FTIR analysis
  • Mhemical composition analysis (e.g. SEM-EDX)
  • pDSC testing
  • Water content in oils
  • Photo-documentation at both macro and micro scale
  • Recording and reporting of results using the clients web-based LIMS software as well as technical report writing
  • Utilization of microscopy techniques
  • Execution of failure analysis of varying type and complexity involving any available investigation techniques

QMS implantation & compliance

  • Ensures implementation of relevant QMS requirements for materials testing laboratories like ISO and Nadcap as well as relevant client procedures e.g. HPS1013, WI0110, ML 092.100 etc.
  • Acts as Quality Assurance Function in this area
  • Develops new methods for analysis and preparation of samples
  • Has ability to recognize and develop opportunities to support engineering customers with advanced lab capabilities.
  • Demonstrates comprehension of mechanical failure analysis and able to provide support in this area.
  • Performs failure analysis investigations and cooperates on investigation projects within HAY.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Materials Science/Metallurgy
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Materials Laboratory with at least 4 months of experience with SEM analysis
  • Experience with microstructural, mechanical and physical properties of aerospace materials advantageous
  • Experience with aerospace materials & process standards (ARPs, AMS, MS, ASTM etc) preferred
  • Demonstrated strong metallographic & chemical analysis skills
  • Demonstrated comprehension of failure analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in optical microscopy
  • Ability and willingness to perform various levels of hands-on lab work including production support, basic metallography, as well as special requests for one-of-a-kind tasks along with sensitive failure analysis requests
  • Demonstrated comprehension of mechanical failure analysis and able to provide support in such analysis
  • Understanding of standard analytical laboratory techniques and general metallographic principles, specimen preparation, etchant preparation and usage
  • Knowledge and experience in using various types of hardness testers
  • Demonstrated experience in optical microscopy
  • Understanding of SEM/EDX and ability to use it independently to analyse and document results
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Power Point, Excel and Outlook) is required
  • Must be able to clearly articulate in verbal and written communication complex technical concepts related to lab work and failure analysis
  • Awareness of safe laboratory practices, including proper procedures for handling, storage and disposal of acids, bases, volatile solvents, toxic chemicals; along with understanding of related hazards
  • Customer focused
  • Must be able to interface with engineering personnel to resolve technical issues
  • Must be able to cope with a high-demand environment where priorities change frequently and many tasks are being worked at the same time
