About the Role

We're looking for several Welding Inspectors to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

The Welding Design Department's workload continues to increase due to a growing demand for welding support and visual inspection on structural and pipework, across surface fleet/submarine platforms and facilities.

As a Welding Inspector you'll draw upon your significant welding and fabrication experience and knowledge of submarines and surface ships to carry out a range of related activities. You'll produce welding related QA documentation for all emergent work and welding related repairs; complete and review welding and NDT quality packs for final acceptance; identify the most appropriate methods for welding/weld repair ensuring that all quality and inspection criteria are met.

You'll also:

  • Conduct inspections to ensure that all quality and inspection criteria are met
  • Support the QA department in carrying out technical audits of welding stores and production welding environments
  • Assist in the development of new or alternative weld procedures to ensure that cost effective production methods are being used
  • Train Babcock staff in the use of welding processes to meet contract specifications.

What do I need to be able to do the role?

You'll have completed a Craft Apprenticeship and City & Guilds in Fabrication/Engineering or equivalent and hold a CSWIP 3:1 qualification in Visual Weld Inspection.

We would also like you to have some or all of the following:

  • Radiation Worker and Confined Space entry qualification.
  • A good working knowledge of submarines / surface ships in welding both structural applications and pipe systems, on all vessel types and facilities.
  • Understanding the role of quality and the work of a Welding QA/QC Engineer.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • NSQAC desirable (Training in post may be offered)

Lastly, strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential attributes for this post, as is the ability to be concise and exact when presenting technical information / solutions to both internal and external senior stakeholders.

What else do I need to know?

  • The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, national Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
  • Passport, Licences and Qualification documents must be shown at interview stage.
