About the Role
Here at Babcock International we're looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the UK Royal Navy. We ensure that the Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.


The Mechanical Handling Group within the 'Engineering Services - Facilities Engineering' Technical Authority are responsible for providing technical support and design consultancy on Babcock non-nuclear and nuclear mechanical handling assets within the Devonport site.
As a Design Engineer you will support with the design configuration (technical drawings and documentation) of the cranes and lifting equipment across Devonport. You will assist in providing technical advice and support to the business on the cranes and lifting equipment, including reporting on the material condition of assets; providing advice on maintenance activities to specific technical queries; specifying replacement equipment/components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for permanent modifications. You will assist in undertaking the design for new equipment and significant upgrades to existing equipment across the full design lifecycle, from requirements capture to detail design and commissioning. You'll also assist in providing support to operations, including fault diagnosis and rectification, and prescribing maintenance and commissioning activities.

What do I need to do the role?
You'll be qualified to degree level in a mechanical engineering discipline.
*Experience of cranes/lifting equipment and crane operations.
*Experience in the design process and the design and substantiation of engineering systems
*Experience of operating within nuclear or other high-hazard environments.
*Experience in the use of CAD and/or FEA packages.

Lastly, this position requires someone who has strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and engage effectively with a range of stakeholders at all levels of the business, in order to support the production of new equipment and the ongoing support to existing equipment.

What else do I need to know?
*The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, national Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
*Passport, licences and qualification documentation must be presented at interview stage.
