About the role

Here at Babcock International, we work in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and provide through-life support for the Royal Navy's submarines, surface ships and associated systems and equipment. Devonport Royal Dockyard facility is co-located with HM Naval Base Devonport to form the largest naval support site in Western Europe.

The Hydrography and Metrology Training Unit (HMTU), formerly FOST HM, delivers training in Hydrography, Meteorology and Oceanography to Royal Navy Officers and Ratings. The joint Babcock Marine Training and Royal Navy teaching staff deliver a range of courses accredited by Plymouth University.

As a Meteorology Training Delivery Instructor, you will deliver professional training and education in Meteorology/Oceanography in accordance with LSPECs as required by the training programme. Also, you will undertake direct support tasks including preparatory work for training delivery activity, post-delivery assessments and post-delivery activities.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Instruction in Mathematics and Science in accordance with LSPECs as required by the training programme
  • Provide SME input into the Training design activities including LSPEC/ASPEC and low level media production
  • Undertake wider contract delivery and support tasks as deemed appropriate by Training Delivery Team Manager
  • Maintain currency and SQEP in line with technical experience
  • To be responsible for the duty of care of trainees under your control
  • Ensure company health, safety and environmental procedures are implemented and complied with at all times for all employees and trainees under your direction

What do I need to do the role?

To be considered for the position you would need to have a BSc or higher in Meteorology/Oceanography or close equivalent and proven forecasting experience.

The below is essential but can be gained once in post:

  • WMO258 Accreditation or equivalent
  • RN Tactical HM Course or equivalent
  • QAA recognised Marine Mammal Observer qualification
  • DCTS Defence Train The Trainer Course or equivalent
  • ILM Level 3 Award (Workplace Coaching for Team Leaders and First Line Management
  • ECDL or equivalent demonstrable proficiency in using IT (hardware/software) within the workplace

What else do I need to know?

This position is a 6 - 12 month fixed term contract with the potential to develop into permanent in the future. This is a term time position and you will work 37 hours per week Monday to Friday. In addition, you must be able to achieve the Developed Vetting level of Security Clearance and have ability to obtain a DBS/CRB clearance.
