About the Role:
Here at Babcock International we're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the UK Royal Navy. We ensure that the Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

The Mechanical Handling Group within the 'Engineering Services - Facilities Engineering' Technical Authority are responsible for providing technical support and design consultancy on Babcock non-nuclear and nuclear mechanical handling and lifting assets within the Devonport site.

The role of the Senior Engineer is primarily to provide professional technical assistance and advice to support ongoing operational availability and maintenance of mechanical handling assets.

This will involve undertaking asset condition surveys, recording defects, reviewing concession applications, preparing asset health reports for critical assets, responding to formal technical queries, supporting fault finding and diagnosis, specifying replacement equipment / components and supporting the production of configuration documentation for any permanent modifications to our assets.

You will also maintain the content and configuration of technical drawings and documentation, carry out periodic reviews of maintenance regimes and activities as well as undertaking obsolescence reviews.

The secondary purpose of this role is the provision of in house design consultancy where you will be generally focused on the provision of new, or modifications to, crane designs, lifting equipment and systems to support new operational capabilities as well as carry out life extension activities to ensure maximum safe use of assets.

What do I need to do the role?
You'll ideally be qualified to degree level in a mechanical engineering discipline or equivalent with demonstrable work experience of cranes and have experience in supporting lifting / mechanical handling operations.
* Experience of cranes/lifting equipment and crane operations.
* Knowledge and experience of LOLER / PUWER would be advantageous
* Some experience of mechanical design / hand calculations would be beneficial
* Have some background in conducting desktop and visual condition surveys

Lastly, this position requires someone who has strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and engage effectively with a range of stakeholders at all levels of the business, in order to support the production of new equipment and the ongoing support to existing equipment.

What else do I need to know?
* The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to acquire, national Security Clearance at the appropriate level for this post.
* Passport, licences and qualification documentation must be presented at interview stage.
