About the role

Here at Babcock, we are looking for an Enabling Works Design Manager to join the team at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We are a key strategic partner to our customers the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes.

A significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the Devonport site to meet the needs of the future MOD ship and submarine programmes. A new 'Major Infrastructure Projects' (MIP) Business Unit has been established to focus on the large-scale facility developments needed.

As the Enabling Works Design Manger, you will use your experience to manage the delivery of multi-disciplinary designs on the enabling (pre-construction) phase of major upgrade project. The enabling works include demolition, service diversions and provision of facilities to support construction. Each of these related packages will be managed rapidly through the design lifecycle. Liaison and management of key stakeholders across the Dockyard will be essential to ensure designs that meet requirements can be completed, approved and implemented.

What do I need to do the role?

You will be educated to Degree level in a STEM discipline and preferably registered as a Chartered Engineer (or the ability to achieve professional status). You will have suitable appropriate experience in Design Management, Project Management and major infrastructure construction in a multi-discipline environment. You will need effective writing and presentation skills along with a good working knowledge of Microsoft office applications. Lastly, you will have the ability to use BIM clash detection tools would be highly advantageous, as would previous experience working in Devonport Dockyard.

We would also like you to have the following experience:

  • Development of scalable engineering processes to suit both the nuclear AND non-nuclear environment
  • Experience with nuclear design and BIM
  • Good knowledge of the design lifecycle
  • Health and safety experience within construction or infrastructure

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This will require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) Security Clearance.
