About the role

Energy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.

The Division is expanding rapidly with complex, high-profile defence projects including Type 31 Frigate Design & Build Programme and the Successor Programme, as well as providing engineering services to the UK Surface Ship and Submarine fleet. This includes the Submarine Dismantling Project, providing a safe and environmentally responsible solution for the dismantling the UK's de-fuelled nuclear powered submarines after they have left service with the Royal Navy.

As a Health Physicists, you will manage aspects of compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR), the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations and the permits granted under the EASR 2018. You will provide independent advice and guidance to all functions within the Nuclear Business Unit regarding adherence to regulatory requirements and implementation of best practice.

You will ensure that company policy on radiation safety and radioactive waste management matters is defined in fulfilment of legislated and regulatory requirements and, specifically, in compliance with:

  • The conditions and limitations within the Permits granted under the EASR18;
  • The Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017;
  • The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations.

You will provide professional oversight of the company's radioactive waste management arrangements and environmental monitoring programme, as well as monitoring the arrangements for managing radiation safety and radioactive waste. As necessary, you will develop new arrangements to meet the requirements of new legislation or regulations.

What do I need to do the role?

You will hold a Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, or membership of the Society for Radiological Protection. You will be supported in development toward Radiological Protection Advisor RPA status and Radiological Waste Advisor RWA status.

You will have relevant recent experience in the nuclear regulatory and environmental regulation field. You will have experience of implementing, advising, or regulating Radiological Protection & Waste Management arrangements.

You will have professional radiation protection experience. Knowledge and experience of the codes, standards and specifications pertaining to the scope of work. Health Physics background preferred but scientific background with Health Physics experience will be considered.

It would be desirable for you to have:

  • Nuclear Radiological Protection Course (NRPC)
  • Nuclear Emergency Procedures Course (NEPC)
  • Health Physicists Nuclear Emergency Response Course (HPNERC)

What else do I need to know?

  • You will work 37 hours per week Monday to Friday with flexible working arrangements
  • Must be able to be fully security cleared to appropriate level
  • Post is open to British Nationals only due to security consideration
