About the role
We're looking for an Systems Engineering Manager to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.


A significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the Devonport site to meet the needs of the future MOD ship and submarine programmes. A new 'Major Infrastructure Projects' (MIP) Business Unit has been established to focus on the significant facility developments.


As the Systems Engineering Manager (Operations Integration Manager) you will report to the Facility Design Manager and is responsible for articulating how the design packages will deliver the capability functions, and capturing the design concepts within an overall Facility layout through interfacing with users and discipline leads.


You will co-ordinate the operational aspects of the system designs into an overall facility operational concept to demonstrate functional capability and design spatial layout and process management of facility by integration of the system designs into an overall facility layout. Liaise with the User Acceptance Group Lead / Engineer to ensure operational aspects of the system and facility designs are understood and accepted. As well as ensure effective Quality Management Arrangements operate and deliver through compliance with Babcock's Business Management System and Technical Manual.


Using your experience you will ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records, maintained, and that configuration and quality controls applied and ensure that staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team through effective management and communication of the Risk Assessment.

What do I need to do the role?
You will be degree qualified in an appropriate STEM discipline (or relevant experience) and preferably Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council.


We would also like you to have experience in the following areas:

Experience providing expert advice to the sub-contracted design houses to enable them to develop designs;
Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements;
Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience;
Sound understanding of organisational and departmental procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety, and Quality requirements, and the ability to manage projects in accordance with these procedures;
Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications;
Experience of the design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities.

Lastly you must be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills required in the technical management of complex design development throughout the design lifecycle.

What else do I need to know?

The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
