An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a world leading global organisation, our Global FMCG Client, the powerhouse behind Persil, Comfort, Surf and Ben & Jerry's, are currently seeking an Analytical Material Scientist to be based at a their Liverpool Materials Innovation Factory & their Research site in Port Sunlight, Wirral. This is a full-time temporary role for 12 months, 37.5 hour week, paying between £30,822-£37,776 per annum.

You might have heard that we have been working hard for a long time to close the loop on plastics and make our Packaging more sustainable by halving our virgin plastic footprint, making all our packaging 100% recyclable, and accelerating our use of recycled material. We are not talking about planting trees to offset what we do. We're talking about BIG changes from the ground up, and that means we need BIG thinkers. We are looking for material scientists with an innovative mind, who are passionate about developing new packaging technologies that can create a Cleaner Future.

Role Purpose

  • Provide full materials characterisation and understanding, devising mechanistic studies to relate polymeric packaging materials' properties to performance, developing new validation assays when required.
  • Support the work program using existing or newly developed analytical methods applied to packaging material science understanding using a wide array of capabilities.
  • Some of the techniques used will include differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), density measurements, tensile testing and different imaging techniques.
  • Work closely with the analytical team at the Materials Innovation Factory and data scientists to drive predictive modelling, accelerating packaging materials' development.
  • Work to defined project plans and experimental design; contribute to the generation of hypotheses and recommendations to the project leaders to help progress the program and support IP and claim generation.

Profile

  • You will have experience in the application of technical expertise in polymeric materials characterization and development of insights.
  • Must be creative, highly passionate, high energy, willing to think big and inspire others.
  • Must be flexible, agile, challenge the status quo, embrace transformational change and eager to work in multi-disciplinary teams and projects with good teamworking and networking skills.
  • Committed to continually develop your scientific, and competency skills.

Technical Qualifications and Experience

  • A higher-education qualification in Material/Polymer Sciences/Chemistry or a closely related discipline with relevant expertise in applied material science.
  • Ideally experience in materials characterisation.
  • Experience of working in industrial innovation projects is desirable but not essential.
  • Proactive problem solver with strong analytical skills and an ability to manipulate, process, visualise and interpret data to pull out key insights.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary projects and teams. Work effectively with Industrial partners and academic institutions.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills (written and verbal English) with an ability to bring technologies and innovations to life in a clear and engaging way.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
