About the role
We're looking for a Senior Combat Safety Engineer to join us. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

Babcock Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) support delivery of Design, Integrated Logistic Support and Programme Support to the UK `new build' and `in-service' submarine fleet.


From system feasibility analyses of engineering problems and solutions, to fully incorporated design changes, Babcock support the entire submarine product lifecycle.

The Safety Services Group provide Safety and Environment Management advice and support to the Ministry of Defence Submarine Delivery Agency, a key component to ensuring that the nation's nuclear submarine fleet is operational and the nuclear deterrent is continuous.


You will act as a dedicated focal point for Combat System safety expertise on behalf of Babcock, SSE. Responsible for providing safety expertise across a wide range of complex projects, providing consultancy services to Babcock, SSE projects. You will be responsible for the production and technical assurance of safety and environmental documentation of high technical complexity that supports the submarine safety case.

What do I need to do the role?
You will have an understanding of Safety and Environmental Management principles across the maritime domain including; legislative requirements, safety case management, safety assurance throughout product lifecycle and Hazard Identification and Analysis (HIA) techniques.
Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline. IEng accredited with the Engineering Council and actively progressing application towards chartership.

What else do I need to know?

  • The post will be based in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involves working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.
  • You must be a sole UK national, and hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
