Here at Babcock International we are looking to recruit a Senior Project Engineer (Project/Programme Planner) to join our Babcock Naval Nuclear sector, which provides maintenance support to the UK submarine fleet. The Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) business in which this role resides is Babcock's customer facing team within the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA). The vision and primary purpose of the SDA is to lead a high-performing, industrial enterprise to deliver the United Kingdom's submarine capability safely and securely, and more effectively and cost-efficiently every year.

The Strategic Planning Team (SPT) Senior Project Engineer is a permanent, full time role working in a small Babcock team deployed in the direct operational line management of the SDA client's Project Management Office. It will your job to provide individual project management oversight of some of the most significant and technically complex engineering activities in the submarine domain including:

  • Specialist in-service support and advice to the SDA PO through inputting data and running planning and modelling tools using MS Excel and Primavera P6.
  • Conduct programme analysis across the Portfolio.
  • Support risk analysis and to progress risk characterisation studies, including developing SharpCloud capabilities.
  • Apply engineering and project management domain knowledge towards producing technical solutions for delivery of products and services.
  • Contribute to process improvements within the concept, assessment, design and operational lifecycles of submarines and their supporting programmes and projects.
  • Involvement in strategic studies (e.g. Sensitivity Analysis of Submarine Programme, Docking Capacity Studies etc.) and input to Working Groups and Boards as required.

You'll also be supported with career planning to ensure you can move and develop outside of this role back into the wider Babcock business or potential promote to lead the seconded team.

For the right high calibre candidate there may be opportunity to develop some of the skills in-role

What do I need to do the role?

You will need an Engineering based Degree qualification supported by CEng status, or demonstrated plan of working towards CEng status.

Would also like you to have the following:

  • Previous experience as a Project Engineer or project support position within a programme for the delivery of complex equipment/system projects.
  • Good interpersonal, communication skills in order to support daily liaison with the customer.
  • Experience in writing strategic reports to senior stakeholders - this would be valuable.
  • Previous experience in defence is compulsory, ideally in a submarine environment
  • Previous experience of Primavera P6 Scheduling would be an advantage but is not essential.

Lastly, if you have a Project Management qualification at APMP level or above from a recognised institute or appropriate level of experience - this would be desirable.

What else do I need to know?

  • The successful candidate will need to satisfy security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
  • Although post-Covid the opportunity to work flexibly from home is available, the requirements for special software and IT infrastructure requires the individual to be able to work in the North Bristol area as required.
