Principal Safety and Environmental Engineer

Based from Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth

£49,740 - £62,140 (Dependent on experience and location)

About The Role

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate, and are pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting frigate exports, the engineering team is actively working on other complex shipbuilding programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers, alongside our established in service support contracts for UK and overseas customers.

We are looking to significantly expand our engineering and ship design teams in order to exploit all of these opportunities and so if you are interested in taking your career in an exciting new direction then consider Babcock for your next move.

You will join a national team of over 700 Engineers and Designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock.

We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine systems engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth and Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

The role is within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.

As a Principal Safety and Environmental Engineer, you will be responsible for developing the safety and environmental engineering strategy in line with the requirements of the various export opportunities in the Babcock new build and concept programmes. You will produce the necessary supporting Safety & Environmental documentation for each opportunity (SEMS, SEMP, SECR etc.) In addition, provide governance and assurance to safety and environmental projects as directed.

You will support other member of Safety Engineering Group (SEG) in developing non-nuclear safety and environmental assessments or cases. You will liaise with design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews. Plan and control of work to time, cost and quality. Lastly, provide expertise and support in own engineering specialisation to other members of the safety team.

In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.

What Do I Need To Do The Role?

You will need to have experience in a safety and environmental case related role, ideally in a whole ship concept design environment and have the gravitas to work within a multi-disciplinary team. You will have an extensive engineering background in a relevant discipline and extensive experience of safety and environmental assessment/management processes that is specifically directed towards systems or product safety and environmental assessment in the maritime arena.

You will have experience of working with MoD processes and publications, authoring of technical reports, chairmanship and recording of technical meeting. As well as, experience of constructing a safety argument, facilitating/undertaking Hazard Identification and Assessment exercises.

Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in a relevant field will be considered. You will hold the Defence Maritime Regulator's (DMR) Ship Safety & Environmental Management Training (SEMT) or Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certificate or equivalent. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered Engineer status.

What Else Do I Need To Know?

This is not a Health & Safety or SHEF type role, it requires an extensive engineering background in a relevant field.

You will work 36/37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Our teams are currently working from home with a future agile working approach for 2/3 days onsite per week in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth. Lastly, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance for this position.
