About the role

Energy & Marine (E&M) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. E&M Engineering is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. We have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.

There is a requirement for world-class Principal Engineers to represent Babcock across the business, whether in specific projects like the Type 31 Frigate or in a multi-company rainbow team working directly for the customer.

As a Principal Naval Architect, you will be responsible for developing and leading the delivery of technical solutions across a wide range of tasks, from concept design studies, new build bid submissions in the surface ship domain. They are required to be lead the development of not only the technical solutions but also the individuals and teams they work in. you will be a leading technical authority on whole ship / concept design.

You will produce technical reports or other documentation and support the maintenance and improvement in quantity standards of outputs. In addition, you will support and mentor the team members to support both their effective working, and their development, while ensuring that, health, safety and environmental requirements are implemented.

What do I need to do the role?

You will have experience in naval architecture on vessels/marine platforms, defence related design experience, demonstrable experience of using ship stability packages, demonstrable experience of using 2D & 3D CAD packages, experience of undertaking physical trials, experience with working with stakeholders as well as good written and verbal communication skills.

Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in naval architecture or marine engineering with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered Engineer status.

What else do I need to know?

You will work 36 hours per week Monday to Friday. Our teams are currently working from home with a future agile working approach for 2/3 days onsite per week in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth. Lastly, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance for this position.
