We are looking to recruit Multi-Sensory Workers to join the Multi-Sensory Impairment Service at Babcock LDP to provide one to one support for children and young people who have multi-sensory impairment between the ages of 0 to 25.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for a positive and enthusiastic person who relishes a varied and rewarding role, who has patience, empathy, resilience, and an interest in supporting children and young people with sensory impairments?

What will you be doing?

Our team works in a variety of settings supporting children and young people term time in education settings, such as nurseries, mainstream schools, specialist schools and colleges. During some evenings, weekends, and school holidays we provide support in the family home or in the local community. You will work no more than one evening a week and on average 2 weekend sessions a month. You will support 2 to 3 children and young people with sensory impairments, who may have secondary conditions including complex physical and learning disabilities. The training and skills you require will depend on the children and young people you support with specialist training provided.

Each child and young person has different support needs and skills required; examples of some of these young people are shown below:

  • Child in early years within specialist school and holiday support in North Devon
  • Support to move around independently using walker
  • Communication via Makaton and on body signs
  • Child in specialist primary school in Exeter and after school and holiday support in Mid Devon
  • Feeding and supporting with complex medical needs
  • Wheelchair, gastrostomy, hydrotherapy and physio support

The experience you'll bring

Some experience of supporting children and young people with additional needs. Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in a relevant qualification and GCSE numeracy and literacy skills.

It would be desirable to have experience in all or some of these areas:

  • Experience of working with children who have sensory impairment
  • Experience of working with children and young people with other additional needs (physical, learning, behavioural and social)
  • Good knowledge on conditions and medical needs of children with additional needs
  • Experience of implementing a Total communication approach with young people
  • Some knowledge in different methods of communication; Makaton, PECS, on body signs,
  • British Sign Language, Braille
  • Good IT skills, familiar with Word and Excel

Lastly, you will need to be able to plan and work to detailed programmes and have the ability to cover shifts at short notice with the ability to travel in line with the needs of the service.
