Here at Babcock International, our Energy & Marine Division delivers the Master Record Data Centre (MRDC) (Ships) contract for the Surface Ship Configuration Status Accounting service provision. The MRDC is part of the Master Record Centre (Ships), which is the Ministry of Defence principle controlling authority for the provision of configuration management services to record the ship fit definition of the in-service Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary Surface Ships.

Located within the Lakeside facility in Portsmouth the MRDC (Ships) team are responsible for managing and maintaining the Surface Ship Definition Database (SSDD). The SSDD contains millions of records relating to RN and RFA ships. The service ensures the capture of all necessary data and that SSDD is kept relevant and easily accessible. There can be significant impact on-board if SSDD data is not kept current as its information is required to coordinate all maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the fleet effectively. It is therefore vital that the MRDC is provided with timely and accurate source material, e.g. A&A Installation Solutions, End of Support Period Reports, Drawings and Parts lists in order to maintain up to date information on changes to Ship Fit.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for a Configuration Engineer to undertake configuration accounting tasks, which involves for the extraction of configuration data from approved source material to ensure the SSDD is maintained with the right data at the right time. This involves interpreting technical data from drawings, specifications and other technical publications, comparing to data held in the SSDD and updating SSDD as required.

What will you be doing?

As the Configuration Engineer, you will be responsible for the accuracy of your own work, whilst working under the direction of both the Configuration Assurance Manager and the Configuration Team Lead. The role includes liaising with stakeholders to resolve data conflicts whilst ensuring tasks are completed within the contracted timescales.

The experience you will bring

You will hold an ONC/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent engineering academic qualification with suitable experience in engineering, preferably within the MoD Maritime domain.

You will be a strong communicator both with internal and external stakeholders, as well having technical knowledge and ability to present data issues internally. You will be a strong team player who can interact well within your own team and other teams and business areas.

Engineering experience is desirable with knowledge of support activities within the MoD Maritime environment being an advantage. However, we would like you to have some defence or MoD awareness. Lastly, you will have the eligibility for SC Clearance and ITAR controls.
