About The Role

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We've built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate, and are pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting frigate exports, the engineering team is actively working on other complex shipbuilding programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers, alongside our established in service support contracts for UK and overseas customers.

We are looking to significantly expand our engineering and ship design teams in order to exploit all of these opportunities and so if you are interested in taking your career in an exciting new direction then consider Babcock for your next move.

You will join a national team of over 700 Engineers and Designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock.

We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine systems engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth and Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

The role is within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you are responsible for preparing, developing and substantiating Marine and Mechanical designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. You are required to contribute to product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs.

Your primary deliverable are substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions; this can include development/analysis and/or verification/validation of Power and Propulsion designs, development of Auxiliary Ship Systems and/or HVAC for existing and new build/concept designs. You will be responsible for preparation and production of substantiation reports for solutions during the entire design lifecycle phases (Concept, Basic, Functional, Detail, Manufacturing, Installation and Decommissioning), in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.

You will be responsible for;

  • Liaising with and providing support to design teams and other stakeholders to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews.
  • Develop and support innovative design solutions.
  • Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries.
  • Produce technical reports and other documentation.

What Do I Need To Do The Role?

You will be required to demonstrate proven experience in mechanical/marine engineering. Although not essential, defence related design experience and demonstrable experience in CAD, FEA and CFD would be an advantage.

Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in a relevant field will be considered. Ideally, you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.), hold or be working towards Chatered Engineer or Incorporated status.

What Else Do I Need To Know?

You will work 36/37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Our teams are currently working from home with a future agile working approach for 2/3 days onsite per week in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth. Lastly, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance for this position.
