Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing and guiding technical activities resulting from approved self-initiated or assigned quality programs leading to innovative applications and extensions of existing or new quality programs having major importance to the business unit level.
  • Establishes and cultivates an extensive network of resources (laboratory, manufacturing, engineering, sales and marketing) to facilitate completion of assignments.
  • Actively participates in project planning. Establishes project objectives and priorities. Maintains an awareness of quality improvement and product opportunities and is productive in suggesting and testing ideas. Develops and implements quality systems and processes of major complexity.
  • Documents results, observations and conclusions in technical notebooks (or approved electronic files) and prepares reports to communicate results to appropriate personnel. May occasionally train, counsel, and guide technicians, technologists, and engineers. Demonstrated ability to lead teams and projects is required. Functions as an effective team leader and promotes harmonious and efficient working relationships. T

Interactions, Role, Resource Coordination, Leadership

Assignments are generally given in terms of overall objective without detailed instructions. Establishes and manages major projects of technical importance to the business. Identifies opportunities, initiates projects, and assesses risk/opportunity to prioritise new concepts/programs. Moves programs through multiple process/technologies; assumes a leadership role of complex projects. Knowledge and skills of scientific/engineering principles and the understanding of quality systems and the organisations business are the basis of completing assigned tasks. Identifies, plans, recommends, and completes assignments leading towards profound process and product understanding of significant importance. Implements developing technologies to solve problems. Assignments may involve major projects covering extended time periods and the coordination with several other organisations. The supervisor monitors progress, and results are reviewed along the project path for accuracy and thoroughness. Usually reports to a quality supervisor, manager, or senior technical individual.

Develops an extensive knowledge of laboratory, manufacturing, engineering, sales, and marketing functions. Is required to cross functional boundaries and interface with these business disciplines on a routine basis. Provides consulting in an area of expertise or technology within the business unit.

Maintains awareness of current and developing safety policies and procedures, and applies the same to all assignments. Follows and promotes current and developing corporate business conduct, safety, health, and environmental policies and practices. May instruct co-workers in appropriate safety practices. Must be an innovator and implementer of new methods and techniques. Acts as a quality resource assisting in deploying best practices to identify, quantify and control quality costs, systems, and processes.

The job has regular contact with others in the assigned business unit. Establishes periodic contacts with resource personnel such as Six Sigma Operations, Corporate Quality Services, PI&C, Sourcing, Technical Centers, and other staff support groups. Contacts may involve explaining and discussing difficult information, establishing rapport, exercising patience and gaining understanding of technical issues, and business unit and corporate objectives.

The job has frequent contact with others outside the company including suppliers, vendors, contractors, consultants, and customers that involve explaining and discussing difficult information, establishing rapport, exercising patience, gaining understanding, and maintaining confidentiality.

May have an opportunity to work with multinational or global contacts, acting as a consultant, and/or transferring technology. Although other languages are helpful, no language other than English is required.

Working Conditions

The job primarily involves non-confined position with some standing or walking. The job involves visual as well as mental concentration requiring the ability to handle situations under stress. Equipment start-up and operational problem solving may involve climbing over partially finished equipment using prior training and awareness to operate safely. Work environment is mostly clean and comfortable, but may include some annoyances such as noise, odors, and drafts. When in a plant location, a significant portion of the time may be spent in dirty and/or hazardous situations involving the use of protective clothing and equipment with long work hours required. Travel to plants in other locations may be expected and required.
