About the role

On the job and technical training to build post graduate skills into those required by an Engineer. This includes undertaking research and development projects, either small projects which stand alone or parts of larger projects working under the auspices of a Contractors Engineering Manager and/or Senior Project Engineer.


Main Tasks:

1. Under the guidance of a CEM and/or Senior Project Engineer, undertake work on engineering projects.
2. Investigate possible solutions to engineering problems, exercising innovation and engineering judgement to identify the optimum method of technique for undertaking the work.
3. Document project work as it is undertaken, including making contributions to formal project progress reports and to gain an understanding and experience of project planning and estimating techniques.
4. Supervise engineering operations undertaken by Company employees and / or contractors, on site to ensure that the Company receives quality up to specification.
5. Gain a good understanding of leading edge engineering practices through in house and external training courses and gain the experience of working in overall different Divisions / Departments / Functions.
6. Ensure that at all times safe working practices are used in accordance with statutory safety standards.

1. Evidence is shown of the capability of original thinking, an enquiring mind with established analytical investigative skills.
2. Technical skills are displayed with the methodologies, operational and manual skills appropriate to the relevant engineering discipline.
3. Time and resource management skills are demonstrated that have developed and implemented appropriate methods of working to meet the demands of the role.
4. Through working continuously and proactively knowledge and skills are acquired to satisfactorily fulfil the role to be undertaken.
5. There is clear evidence shown of customer and business awareness through a clear understanding of the financial and technical issues relating to the work to be undertaken.
6. Ownership is taken of work problems and a high level of performance displayed in the face of pressure. An approach to work that is characterised by commitment, motivation and energy


What do I need to do the role?

Person Specification:

1. Honours degree in Engineering, Physics, Maths or a closely related subject (minimum 2:1 desirable).
2. Technically competent with a thorough understanding of general theoretical principles, together with an in-depth knowledge of specialists engineering discipline.
3. Interest in engineering techniques, including current standards and practices.
Awareness of industry trends and developments.
4. Capable of original work together with an enquiring mind with well-developed analytical and investigative skills.
5. Good written and oral communication skills, able to promote ideas by logical argument and capable of presenting the results of a project in a clear and effective manner.
6. Sound time and resource management skills and be able to lead, motivate and direct support staff and contractors contributing to the project.
7. Self-motivated, with the drive and initiative to carry out projects according to plan.
8. Must be able to use computers as research and development tools with knowledge and experience of writing and applying software.
9. Able to work as part of a team.
10. An interest in developing and maintaining expertise relevant to his / her field of work.
