Marine Engineering & Systems - Shipbuilding Export Variants

Principal Mechanical Design Engineer role is based within Marine Engineering & Systems - Shipbuilding Export Variants.

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

You will join a national team of over 800 engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

The difference our new Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will make

As Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is a highly prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting bidding processes.

Day-to-day, you will be responsible for authoring, reviewing and substantiating Marine and Mechanical designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. You will be required to contribute and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs. You will act as Technical Authorities and have deep subject knowledge of an aspect of Marine/Mechanical engineering.

Your primary deliverables are substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions; this can include development/analysis and/or verification/validation of Power and Propulsion designs, development of Auxiliary Ship Systems and/or HVAC for existing and new build/concept designs. In addition, you will lead design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews, and act as Technical Authorities within your area of expertise.

You'll have a high level of developed knowledge, the role is directly accountable for design development, and determines solutions to problems and issues within your specialist subject area. You will provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their development.

Essential experience

  • Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an Engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered
  • You will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered status
  • You will have proven design experience and demonstrable experience in CAD, FEA and CFD would be an advantage, as would experience of Power and Propulsion systems, Auxiliary Systems and HVAC
  • You will have experience in mechanical/marine engineering
  • Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearance
