The role
As an Occupational Hygienist, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Babcock has started a series of major infrastructure projects at Devonport in Plymouth. Over the next 10 years Babcock will develop state of-the-art facilities to meet the evolving requirements of the UK's Royal Navy.

Day-to-day, you'll be working within the Major Infrastructure Projects Safety Health and Environment team and Construction Projects. You'll assist with the assessment of exposures to physical, chemical and biological agents in the workplace, and to partake in assurance and monitoring activities for health-related workplace hazards at Devonport Royal Dockyard in accordance with the relevant legislation and the best practice.

  • Advising management and employees on compliance with relevant legislation e.g. COSHH, noise, vibration, lead and in-house standards.
  • Conducting workplace inspections, audits and assessments to check compliance status and identify potentially harmful activities.
  • Assessing health risks as required by legislation, including, where appropriate, measurement of levels of exposure to harmful substances, noise, vibration etc. and supporting COSHH assessment process.
  • Investigating, researching and providing recommendations, suitable and cost-effective measures to prevent or reduce exposure levels as low as reasonably practicable following the hierarchy of control, e.g. by process/equipment change, local exhaust ventilation, respiratory and personal protective equipment etc.
  • Managing occupational hygiene information, and literature and promote its communication by various routes in the business e.g. Technical Bulletins and Toolbox Talk's. Providing continuing personal development, presentations and articles to support learning to colleagues and contractors.

This role is full time 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Occupational Hygienist

  • Experience in occupational hygiene.
  • Work experience in a construction industry

Qualifications for the Occupational Hygienist

  • Certification of minimum 4 BOHS core occupational hygiene modules - M(W): 501, 503, 505, 507.
  • Bachelor's Degree in science studies (BSc).
  • BOHS membership
  • Certification of Competence in Occupational Hygiene - Desirable
  • Master's Degree (MSc) in Occupational Hygiene - Desirable
  • P601 Thorough Examination and Testing (TExT) certification - Desirable

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
