Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Advisor
We are seeking a professional HSE advisor for a minimum of three months contract in Blyth. Please note that this position is Inside IR35 and will therefore be paid as PAYE or Umbrella.
You will be an experienced and proactive HSE Advisor to join a busy heavy engineering environment, supporting operational and project activities across site. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated HSE professional who is passionate about driving continuous improvement, strengthening safety culture, and ensuring compliance with legal and management system requirements.
Working closely with senior SHEQ leadership, operational teams, and project stakeholders, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving integrated management systems certified to ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001 standards.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide practical advice, guidance, and hands-on support on all HSE matters across site.
  • Support the ongoing development and effectiveness of the SHEQ management systems.
  • Promote a strong culture of continuous improvement and employee engagement in HSE activities.
  • Maintain and manage the site risk assessment register.
  • Support managers and employees in producing suitable and sufficient risk assessments.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) for high-risk activities, including:
    • Working at height
    • Confined spaces
    • High-voltage systems
    • Heavy lifting operations
    • Construction activities
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Deliver HSE inductions for new employees and contractors.
  • Maintain DSE and COSHH assessment registers and databases.
  • Manage PPE processes including specification, training, storage, and inspections.
  • Support Legionella compliance activities for cooling towers and water systems.
  • Coordinate and deliver internal and external HSE training.
  • Maintain the HSE training matrix and database.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, talksafes, and 5S audits.
  • Participate in project FMEAs and support compliance with CDM requirements.
  • Conduct internal SHEQ audits in line with the annual audit programme.
  • Assist with HSE statistics, KPI reporting, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Support out-of-hours emergency response activities as part of the Asset-On-Call team.
  • Manage contractors and consultants to ensure compliance with company and legislative requirements.
  • Deputise for the HSE Manager when required.

About You
You will be a confident and resilient HSE professional with strong communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation.
Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience working within a heavy engineering, manufacturing, or other high-hazard environment.
  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of UK HSE legislation and safe working practices.
  • Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a team.

Desirable

  • Experience working with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certified management systems.
  • Experience supporting construction projects from an HSE perspective.
  • Internal or Lead Auditor qualification for ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001.
  • Environmental management qualification such as IEMA or NEBOSH Environmental Certificate.

What You'll Be Doing
This role offers significant variety and visibility across the business, working closely with operational departments including Maintenance, Facilities, HR, Quality, and Projects. You will also liaise with external bodies including contractors, customers, and regulatory authorities.
