You will be investigating the role that BCU plays in supporting the local region, focusing on one of the two following topics:

  • The match between BCU graduates and the skills needed in the West Midlands; or
  • How BCU supports the local community by enabling people to study in their own region (as "commuter students").

The research will be used to provide a case study for an external call for evidence into the value of higher education, and to contribute towards the creation of an evidence-base for senior managers.

The successful student will be supported to create an appropriate research question, and will then be expected to find their own data set (qualitative or quantitative, as appropriate), although we can provide some aggregated data about the BCU student population.

They will then need to present their findings in the most appropriate manner - this is expected to be in the form of a written report, although this might be supported by data visualisations or other presentation methods.

Some support and guidance can be provided by both data and policy analysts within the Planning and Performance Department, but applicants need to be confident that they can work independently.

Exact working hours can be agreed between the successful applicant and their line manager, but we are anticipating the project will run for one or two days a week over two or three months.
