THE PROJECT

The Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences has awarded Alice Storey (School of Law) and Dr. Mark Eccleston-Turner (External Partner at Keele University) with a Small Development Grant to support their collaborative research on the United Nations and the Right to Health.

Their research project - 'Antiretrovirals and the Right to Health: An Examination of the UN UPR's Effectiveness in Improving Access to AZT in HIV-Prevalent States' - will see them collaborate with student partners to examine the effectiveness of the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on advancing the realisation of the Right to Health. Access to antiretrovials (a class of medicines critical to the successful management of HIV) will be the case study, which is a non-derogable obligation under the Right to Health. This project will examine to what extent the UPR mechanism can been used to improve access to antiretrovirals in the top five states where HIV prevalence is highest: Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia. The outcome of this research will be presented at legal conferences and submitted to the Bulletin of the World Health Organisation.

Applicants should be either in year two or three of their LLB or a postgraduate student, with an average 2:1 grade, and great attention to detail. An interest in research is desirable but not necessary.

Following completion of the role, there may also be opportunities for the student partners to take part in a research seminar within the School of Law and present at the School of Law's Student Conference. This project can be included on your CV.

Deadline for applications: Friday 26 October 2018
