We are currently seeking an interim Colloid Scientist, to work with our global FMCG client, renowned for brands such as Domestos, Cif, Persil, and Comfort, and become an integral part of their fast-paced Scientific FMCG environment.

The position is based at the Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool City Centre (L7), accessible by train, bus and car. This is a full-time temporary role to run for 6 months requiring 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Compensation for this role is competitive, paying up to £46,522 per annum, pro rata, depending upon experience.

This role is for an experienced physical scientist, with a background in colloid or interface science, working as part of the Home Care Science & Technology Group.

The team provides innovations across the Home Care product portfolio, including a programme in developing new future-proofed ingredients and Home Care formulations that provide unmissably superior performance and consumer experiences.

The ideal candidate has a strong chemistry or materials science background with experience in empirical colloid and surface measurements, and interpretation to generate insights into behaviours of surfactants and polymers in solution and at relevant surfaces (e.g. domestic hard surface substrates and textiles).

Experience Required:

  • A postgraduate degree in a colloid or surface science-related area. Candidates with a first degree in a relevant physical sciences discipline with at least two year's experience in an appropriate field may also be considered.
  • A background in colloid science and/or experience of experimental techniques for measuring colloidal behaviour, polymer-surfactant interactions and surface property measurements is essential.

  • The role requires leading edge expertise in the discipline of colloid and interface science to design and conduct insight delivering experiments, interpret data and communicate results to a multi-disciplinary team.

    The ideal candidate demonstrates outstanding experimental technique and attention to detail for the creation of robust data sets as well as a strong commitment to safe practise in the laboratory as a job fundamental.

    The principal responsibilities of the role are to:

    • Lead the core colloid science discipline for the team, delivering technical depth and fundamental understanding to:
      • build knowledge on how "next generation" sustainable ingredients interact with surfaces and other formulation ingredients;
      • apply these insights to develop design rules and feed in silico predictive models for optimum ingredient and formulation performance.
    • Identify and build cutting edge capabilities (in house techniques and external ecosystems) to aid in implementation of the AMSS programme.
    • Support AMSS and broader HC S&T team upskilling in colloid and surface science by mentoring less experienced colleagues.

    Materials Innovation Factory working environment:

    • Based in Liverpool city centre
    • Facilities purpose-built for innovation with cutting edge technology and world class expertise in materials chemistry and formulation.
    • Nearest train stations are Lime Street or Liverpool Central, which are within walking distance.
