Title: Mobile Electrician - West Midlands
A permanent Mobile Electrician position is available covering the West Midlands, with regular travel between HMP Hewell and HMP Long Lartin. The postholder will be provided with a company van to enable efficient travel between sites.
The role is 39 hours per week, 08:00-17:00 Monday to Friday, with an earlier finish every Friday. There is a requirement to work 1 in 3 weekends on a rota basis, which attracts an additional 15% allowance on basic salary, and participation in an on?call rota.
The base salary is £36,777 - £41,705, depending on experience.
The position sits within a facilities management contract supporting His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), ensuring prisons are safe, clean, and efficiently operated. The Mobile Electrician will be part of a wider mobile engineering team, working across multiple secure sites and playing a key role in maintaining critical electrical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Complete daily, weekly, monthly, and annual PPM and reactive maintenance tasks to ensure statutory and mandatory electrical compliance across designated prisons.
Act as the Responsible Person for electrical systems, supervising, controlling, and managing electrical works to maintain safe and compliant operations.
Undertake the role of Authorised Person (AP), managing electrical isolations and permit?to?work processes in line with agreed Electrical Safety Procedures.
Review electrical installation certification, including EICRs, Installation Certificates, and Minor Works Certificates.
Produce technical documentation such as SOPs, risk assessments, method statements, and toolbox talks.
Assess the competence of directly employed operatives and supply chain partners before issuing work.
Review contractor RAMS and provide technical electrical support to site-based teams.
Maintain site risk registers, identify and escalate defects, and contribute to regular risk meetings.
Liaise with Authorising Engineers, maintain an AP logbook, and proactively manage personal training and development.
Follow all security protocols for MoJ/HMPPS sites, including strict tool management.
Carry out additional duties such as escorting when required.
Qualifications and Experience Required
City & Guilds 2367 or 2357 (or equivalent).
City & Guilds 2391 Inspection & Testing.
BS7671 (18th Edition); 17th Edition may be considered with a commitment to upskilling.
NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installations and/or ECS Gold Card Approved Electrician status.
AM2.
Full UK Driving Licence.
Experience in similar roles within commercial or industrial environments, including test and inspection activities.
Knowledge of PPM processes.
Understanding of fire alarm and CCTV systems (desirable).
